“Extreme Makeover” Family, Milton & Patricia Harper, Have Lost Their Home

http://www.hicktownpress.com/extreme-makeover-family-milton-patricia-harper-have-lost-their-home/

So what do you think about this?

Holy Hot Flash, Batman!

When the novelist Jodi Picoult was approached in 2006 to write a few installments of the "Wonder Woman" comic-book series, her impulse was to dress the character in something besides that clearly unsupportive red and gold bustier. "As any woman writer would know," she opines in the introduction to a collection of the comics, "it's impossible to fight crime without straps." The editors at DC Comics vetoed her request, but Picoult sneaked in her point anyway. In a scene set in a bar frequented by comic-book fans, a tipsy customer muses about how Wonder Woman manages to "fight crime in a freaking bikini." Such is the irony of the planet's premier female superhero. Though she was featured on the first issue of Ms. Magazine under the headline WONDER WOMAN FOR PRESIDENT, she's been written, for most of her 66 years, by a man.

But now women are finally breaking into the boys' comics club. With the release of this month's "Wonder Woman" No. 14, the superhero gets her first permanent, ongoing female scribe, Gail Simone, just as alternative and foreign comics by women are gaining visibility. The movie "Persepolis," based on Marjane Satrapi's graphic memoir about the Iranian revolution, opened Christmas Day, and Megan Kelso's multipart strip "Watergate Sue," about a Nixon-era family, was recently featured in The New York Times Magazine. Kelso's graphic story collection "The Squirrel Mother" was well reviewed, as was Alison Bechdel's 2006 graphic-novel memoir "Fun Home." Manga, a Japanese style of comic featuring huge-eyed characters and often including elements of fantasy, has spawned a female-oriented subset, shoujo manga, some of which outsells regular manga. The ladies aren't exactly kicking the guys off the planet yet—"Spider-Man 3" was the top-grossing movie last year—but they're no longer the comics equivalent of kryptonite, either.

Traditionally, comics have been by, for and about men. DC Comics won't release reader demographics, but industry insiders agree the readership remains overwhelmingly male. (The Web site comicsworthreading.com claims that DC's readership was 92 percent male in 1995.) Dan DiDio, DC's executive editor, describes its audience as "college-aged men who are looking for high adventure, a level of risk, fantasy." "Wonder Woman" fits that mold, with its fantasy-based storyline and action-heavy, cleavage-filled plots. But it remains to be seen whether the increasing number of female voices such as Simone's will win superhero comics more female readers.

There's no question more women are reading comics in general, especially alternative strips and manga. For proof, just go to a convention. "When I used to go to the San Diego comics convention, the only women were children or wives of fanboys who looked oppressed being there," says Eric Reynolds, an editor at the graphic-novel publisher Fantagraphics. "Now it's just as common to have a woman come up to our booth, and for her husband to be the tag-along." The diverse subject matter of alternative comics such as manga and graphic novels, which are the comic world's equivalent of independent film, may partially account for their appeal. Kelso, the author of "The Squirrel Mother," says that the availability of alternative comics in bookstores, as opposed to obscure specialty comics stores, may be another reason. Kelso writes gently wry, family-themed tales—"The Squirrel Mother" depicts a human mother making a dress interspersed with scenes of a squirrel mother tending to her young. Hardly the "Pow! Oof! Bang!" sequences of superhero stories.

But other writers embrace the constraints of traditional comics—or are working to enact change within the genre. Simone, "Wonder Woman's" new scribe, got her start when she published a blog titled Women in Refrigerators that argued that most female comics superheroes end up "depowered, raped, or cut up and stuck in the refrigerator." The blog led to a writing job for the all-female comic "Birds of Prey" for DC—which became a short-lived, live-action TV series—and in turn won her the "Wonder Woman" job. Simone says she sees a change since she wrote her "refrigerator" rant 10 years ago. "At that time, the trend was towards grim stories where female characters were killed," she says. "We only had a handful of female characters to look up to. Today we're not seeing those stories so much." Her plans for future issues include presenting the Amazons, the tribe Wonder Woman came from, as "less a bunch of women in beehives and togas," she says. Simone believes that despite being written by a man for most of her life, Wonder Woman has always been a strong female character, and the writer doesn't plan to insert a feminist agenda to the strip or tone down the superhero's overt sexiness. "Part of her appeal is that she makes your eyes pop out of your head," Simone says. In other words, that bustier is here to stay.

Sure Makes you think

There was a blind girl who hated herself because she was blind. She hated everyone, except her loving boyfriend. He was always there for her.She told her boyfriend, "If I could only see the world, I will marry you.

"One day, someone donated a pair of eyes to her. When the bandages came off, she was able to see everything, including her boyfriend.

He asked her,' Now that you can see the world, will you marry me?'The girl looked at her boyfriend and saw that he was blind. The sight of his closed eyelids shocked her. She hadn't expected that. The thought of looking at them the rest of her life led her to refuse to marry him.

Her boyfriend left her in tears and days later wrote a note to her saying: 'Take good care of your eyes, my dear, for before they were yours, they were mine.

'This is how the human brain often works when our status changes.Only a very few remember what life was like before, and who was always by their side in the most painful sit uations.

Life Is a Gift

Today before you say an unkind word -Think of someone who can't speak.

Before you complain about the taste of your food - Think of someone who has nothing to eat.

Before you complain about your husband or wife - Think of someone who's crying out to GOD for a companion.

Today before you complain about life -Think of someone who went too early to heaven.

Before you complain about your children -Think of someone who desires children but they're barren.

Before you argue about your dirty house someone didn't clean or sweep -Think of the people who are living in the streets.

Before whining about the distance you drive. Think of someone who walks the same distance with their feet.

And when you are tired and complain about your job -Think of the unemployed, the disabled, and those who wish they had your job.

But before you think of pointing the finger or condemning another -Remember that not one of us is without sin and we all answer to one MAKER.

And when depressing thoughts seem to get you down -Put a smile on your face and thank GOD you're alive and still around.

The Plan

Robin Williams, wearing a shirt that says 'I love New York ' in Arabic. You gotta love Robin Williams......Even if he's nuts! Leave it to Robin Williams to come up with the perfect plan. What we need now is for our UN Ambassador to stand up and repeat this message. Robin Williams' plan...(Hard to argue with this logic!) 'I see a lot of people yelling for peace but I have not heard of a plan for peace. So, here's one plan.

' 1) 'The US will apologize to the world for our 'interference' in their affairs, past & present. You know, Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, Tojo, Noriega, Milosevic, Hussein, and the rest of those 'good 'ole' boys', we will never 'interfere' again.

2) We will withdraw our troops from all over the world, starting with Germany , South Korea , the Middle East , and the Philippines . They don't want us there. We would station our troops at our borders. No one allowed sneaking through holes in the fence.

3) All illegal aliens have 90 days to get their affairs together and leave. We'll give them a free trip home. After 90 days the remainder will be gathered up and deported immediately, regardless of whom or where they are. They're illegal!!! France will welcome them.

4) All future visitors will be thoroughly checked and limited to 90 days unless given a special permit!!!! No one from a terrorist nation will be allowed in.
If you don't like it in your country change it yourself and don't try to hide here. Asylum would never be available to anyone. We don't need any more cab drivers or 7-11 cashiers.

5) No foreign 'students' over age 21. The older ones are the bombers.
If they don't attend classes,or they get a 'D' it's back home baby.

6) The US will make a strong effort to become self-sufficient energy wise. This will include developing nonpolluting sources of energy but will require a temporary drilling of oil in the Alaskan wilderness. The caribou will have to cope for a while.

7) Offer Saudi Arabia and other oil producing countries $10 a barrel for their oil. If they don't like it, we go someplace else. They can go somewhere else to sell their production. (About a week of their wells filling up their storage sites would be enough.)

8) If there is a famine or other natural catastrophe in the world, we will not 'interfere.' They can pray to Allah or whomever, for seeds, rain, cement or whatever they need. ! Besides most of what we give them is stolen or given to the army. The people who need it most get very little, if anything.

9) Ship the UN Headquarters to an isolated island someplace. We don't need the spies and fair weather friends here. Besides, the building would make a good homeless shelter or lockup for illegal aliens.

10) All Americans must go to charm and beauty school. That way, no one can call us 'Ugly Americans' any longer. The Language we speak is ENGLISH..learn it...or LEAVE...Now, isn't that a winner of a plan? 'The Statue of Liberty is no longer saying 'Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses.' She's got a baseball bat and she's yelling, 'you want a piece of me?'

Are you a Bad American?

YES, I GUESS THAT I'M A BAD AMERICAN!!

I Am the Liberal-Progressives Worst Nightmare. I am an American. I believe the money I make belongs to me and my family, not some Liberal governmental func tionary be it Democratic or Republican!

I'm in touch with my feelings and I like it that way!

I think owning a gun doesn't make you a killer, it makes you a smart American.

I think being a minority does not make you noble or victimized, and does not entitle you to anything.

I believe that if you are selling me a Big Mac, do it in English.

I believe everyone has a right to pray to his or her God when and where they want to.

My heroes are John Wayne, Babe Ruth, Roy Rogers, and whoever invented the internet .

I know wrestling is fake and I don't waste my time watching or arguing about it.

I've never owned a slave, or was a slave, I haven't burned any witches or been persecuted by the Turks and neither have you! So, shut up already.

I believe if you don't like the way things are here, go back to where you came from and change your own country! This is AMERICA. If you were born here and don't like it you are free to move to any Socialist country that will have you.

I want to know which church is it exactly where the Reverend Jesse Jackson preaches, where he gets his money, and why he is always part of the problem and not the solution. Can I get an AMEN on that one?

I think the cops have every right to shoot your sorry rear if you're running from them..

I also think they have the right to pull you over if you're breaking the law, regardless of what color you are.

And, no, I don't mind having my face shown on my drivers license. I think it's good..... And I'm proud that 'God' is written on my money.

I think if you are too stupid to know how a ballot works, I don't want you deciding who should be running the most powerful nation in the world for the next four years.

I dislike those people standing in the intersections trying to sell me stuff or trying to guilt me into making 'donations' to their cause.

I believe that it doesn't take a village to raise a child, it takes two parents..

I believe 'illegal' is illegal no matter what the lawyers think.

I believe the American flag should be the only one allowed in AMERICA!

If this makes me a BAD American, then yes, I'm a BAD American.

I Believe that everyone should speak the same language. ENGLISH Amen

If you are a BAD American too, please forward this to everyone you know.

We want our country back!

I think I may have spent $25 and got enough crafts for the kids for the rest of the summer plus all kinds of toys, shampoo, soaps, vitamins and makeup to last me the next couple of years!!

Most items were $.25 and up to $.99.

Check your local stores for their clearance markdown sections. You would be suprised what they have there.

There were even some items I didn't get to get pics of.

Getting Healthy....Back to Beach and out with the TV

So for those of you don't know about our recent life change let me fill you in. We recently decided the whole family could use for an overhaul. Larry had a recent visit to the Dr. and she said he has very high cholesterol. One of our biggest downfalls is the TV and video games. We always talk about how much we want to go to the beach, camp and just get out in general. But it is so easy to plop out butts down and watch another hour of mindless reality tv or hours on end of games. WE had it good a 56" High Definition tv, a xbox 360, playstation 3 and a Wii.

But we were getting a bit more round around the middle than should be healthy for anyone.

So here is what we did. We sold the TV all the game systems and electronics and bought a bike and a Kayak. We are still working on bikes for the whole family but it's a start. Larry will be riding his bike to work at least 2 days a week to start and one weekend day. Not only will this help him get back into shape and loose some weight but it will save us in gas $$$ too!!

Boy is his bike pretty!!! The kayak is really cool too!!!

Soooo...how has it been so far? Honestly we don't really miss it. If we absolutely want to watch a movie from Blockbuster or a tv show online we have our computers and the girls still have their tv and stuff.

We haven't gotten into the full swing of things yet but it is a start in a healthy direction.

What's for Dinner Tonight? Today's recipe: Leftover Quiche

Ok I don't know about your family but mine hate leftovers...LOL! So I try to find new ways to use said leftovers in a new way so they don't think of it that way.

I love quiche. In case you are not familiar with it here is the Wikepedia definition:

In French cuisine, a quiche (IPA: [ki:ʃ]) is a baked dish that is made primarily of eggs and milk or cream in a pastry crust. Other ingredients such as cooked chopped meat, vegetables, or cheese are often added to the egg mixture before the quiche is baked.

There are many variations of it but what i have found over the years is it a great way to "re-invent leftovers".

Here is the recipe I used today (but you can use pretty much any variation depending on what you have in the fridge.

The main ingredient of course is eggs. I used 9 today because well, that is how many we had left. It all depends on how dense you like it. Recipes vary from 8-15 eggs that I have seen but i like it a bit lighter so we use less.

The next main ingredient is cheese. Well at least it is in mine. Course if you follow Julia Child...Cheese is not an ingredient of the original Lorraine recipe, as Julia Child informed Americans: "The classic quiche Lorraine contains heavy cream, eggs and bacon, no cheese."[

Yeah well, I like mine with cheese...Thank you very much.

I use pretty much whatever we have in the fridge. I had some cheese we had for pizzas a few days ago and some from some tacos. I also addeda bit more colby and a bit of parmesean for good measure. AS you can see you can use pretty much whatever kind you want and amount you want. I probaby used about 1-1 1/2 cups.

The next main ingredients are sour cream, garlic and basil. I used what I had left from taco night, probably about a 1/2 cup and then a little garlic to your taste and basil. I have fresh Basil thanks to my AEROGARDEN ( Thanks MOM!) (if you ar not familiar and love basil and other spices that can be grown right in your own kitchen look here:

Next is really up to you. I added ham and bacon we had left from a breakfast and some tomato and olives left over agian from taco night. I also had a bit of cream of Spinach from one night. So you pretty much pour it all in and mix it up good.

Now you can either pour it in a large casserole dish as is or put a crust down like I do. I use leftover Ritz crackers and crumble them up and pour about 1/4 cup of butter over it a pat it down. I then our it in and cook at 350 degrees until the top is brown. I let it set for a bit before serving and viola.

Tastes really good with a loaf of french bread and some fruit.

YUMMY!!

The pictures above show the crust, filling and final product.

Peach Pie Recipe

Peach Pie the Old Fashioned Two Crust

PREP TIME
45 Min
COOK TIME
45 Min
READY IN
1 Hr 30 Min

INGREDIENTS
· 1 (15 ounce) package pastry for a 9 inch double crust pie
· 1 egg, beaten
· 5 cups sliced peeled peaches about 10 peaches
1/4 teaspoon vanilla
· 1 tablespoon lemon juice
· 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup of brown sugar
· 1 cup white sugar
· 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
· 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
· 1/4 teaspoon salt
· 2 tablespoons butter

DIRECTIONS
Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F (220 degrees C).
Boil peahces for about 1 minute and then dun into cold water and peel of skin. cut them in half, remove pit and slice into pieces.
Line the bottom and sides of a 9 inch pie plate with one of the pie crusts. Brush with some of the beaten egg to keep the dough from becoming soggy later.
Place the sliced peaches in a large bowl, and sprinkle with lemon juice and vanilla. Mix gently. In a separate bowl, mix together the flour,3/4 cup sugar, 1/4 cup brown sugar,1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, nutmeg and salt. Pour over the peaches, and mix gently. Pour into the pie crust, and dot with butter. Cut out heart and star shapes with remaining pie crust cover peaches so there are still a few showing through seal or press the edges(we had more extra so we made some fun personalized letters) . Brush the remaining egg over the top of the crust. Sprinkle with remaining sugar, brown sugar and cinnamon.
Bake for 10 minutes in the preheated oven, then reduce the heat to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and bake for an additional 30 to 35 minutes, until the crust is brown and the juice begins to bubble through the vents. If the edges brown to fast, cover them with strips of aluminum foil about halfway through baking. Cool before serving. This tastes better warm than hot.

Good deeds Day

Today was a good day. At our local Movie Theatre they are showing older movies for free at 10 am. I figured this would be a nice thing for me and the kids to do. Early this morning we went to the grocery store and bought some peaches to make a homemade peach pie after the movies.

I found some coupons for the concession online for $5 and figured I would print them out and see if they would work. So we swung by the store got our pie fixings and then dropped them off before heading to the movies early to make sure we got a spot.

When we got there we were the second people there so we definitely would get in. They opened the doors a bit before the movies started and the kids and I headed to the concession stand. I handed the girls each one of the coupons and let them order the kids reel deal (box with popcorn, small drink and small candy) which cost $5. They didnt know if they took them, manager said yes they are put in as cash. As my girls were finishing up and I was ordering myself one I hear behind me a mother and her 2 kids talking about what they can get. They pull out ziploc bags of change that they have saved to get the overpriced goodies. I dig in my purse and pull out 3 more coupons that I just happened to print out and hand them over and let them know they can get the kids meal deal "FOR FREE!!" The light that shone over the kids and mother's face just made my day!

Now maybe they could use those carefully saved coins for gas to get home...LOL!!

So I felt really good about that and we had a wonderful time at the movies.

Then when i came home we made the really beautiful peach pie I have been waiting all day to make.

Then to make the day even ore rewarding I had a lady come over that I contacted whose sister just passed away a few days ago. She was left with her sister's 2 kids and has 2 of her own. I gave her a ton of the girls old clothes as well as Mychael's. She was so thankful.

I did two good deeds today and was rewarded with a free fun day with my wonderful kids and a delicious(hopefully) peach pie I made with my own two hands.

Life is good!!!
